Christmas Eve

comfy bed

During our shopping outing, we picked up a new down comforter, pillows, and sheets at IKEA. They've proven an exquisite investment. Anne, who's been having a hard time sleeping, and therefore a poor relationship to the bed, now can't wait to get into it, and Leighton doesn't want to get out of it. Doesn't it look comfortable?

the holidays

Fall semester is over and done with: Leighton got an A+ on his Norwegian exam and an A for his final grade, and Anne finally finished grading her exams! Now we're looking forward to Christmas. We have a surprisingly larger number of presents under the tree, begging the question, "Do we really need to get anything for each other?"! Yes, we decided, so tomorrow we are going up to the city to do some shopping. Then we have a date at Origami, our favorite sushi restaurant. After Christmas, we are off to Chicago for the MLA conference where Anne is reading a paper. We also look forward to going out to eat in Chicago and meeting a few of Anne's friends. Then comes New Year's Eve! Which will be a big one for us, seeing as it starts the count down to June 4 – we can hardly wait!

midwives

We met with two midwives last Wednesday and have meetings with two other midwives at the beginning of the year. We liked the two we met with – they work together – but we want to interview a few more before making a decision. Anne has contacted all the midwives in the Twin Cities metro and has already narrowed down the search; we hope to find a match for us by the end of January.

the pregnancy so far

On October 5, we found out that I'm pregnant; my due date was estimated to June 4. We were elated and surprised that we were able to conceive a child. Since then we (Anne in particular) have eagerly been reading up on pregnancy and birth and all the stages of our growing little baby. This site (babycenter) talks about what's going on with the baby and the mother, week by week. Now at 14 weeks, the baby has developed from zygote via embryo to a fetus at about 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and weighing approx. 1 1/2 ounces. I am hopeful that the second trimester will bring some relief from the fatigue, nausea, and headaches I've been bothered by so far but I realize some women struggle with these symptoms throughout their pregnancy. Reading about all the things that are going on in the body, it is not surprising that there are certain side effects.

tredje desember

December first was our one year engagement anniversary. A lot has happened in just one year. Instead of telling you all about that, with this blog we will try to keep you up to date on what we are expecting for this next year. And everything in between.
